Discover Elena Hiatt Houlihan’s Journey of Art, Adventure and Resilience

Elena Hiatt Houlihan is a photographer, artist and a solo traveler. She has worked with welders in metal shops to build sculptures for commercial spaces, captured travel scenes in over forty countries —from a Hindu cremation in Bali to Aztec danzantes in Mexico, and taught hundreds of lively kids to design and create original art.

She ignored her family’s suggestions: “return to teaching, get a real job”, which sparked her quest to find creative people following their own passion outside the corporate system. Elena currently lives part-time in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and travels nomadically publicizing her new book, An Unrealistic Life: The Art of Following Your Dream Without Getting a Real Job, a colorfully illustrated memoir that chronicles a lifelong quest to live an authentic, self-directed life as an artist, defying societal norms and the persistent pressure to get a “real job”– a testament to the courage it takes to pursue a dream, no matter the obstacles.
